Definitions
Three dictionary definitions with their words mixed up. Swap them back into place, using the colours to work out what belongs where.
How to play
Each row holds one definition, but the words have been shuffled across the board. Tap two words to swap them. Green means a word is in the correct position, where it locks in place. Orange means it belongs in that row but needs to move. Grey means it belongs in another row. In high-contrast mode, orange marks a correct position and blue marks the correct row.
Every puzzle can be solved in 10 swaps, and you have 20 to work with. That gives you room to test where a word belongs as you put the definitions back together. There is a new puzzle each day, with earlier ones in the archive. If you enjoyed Headlines, which is currently taking a break, you will recognise the same rules here.
Working towards ten swaps
Start with the most distinctive words. A specific noun can tell you more about a definition than words such as “a”, “of” or “who”, which could fit almost anywhere. Use it to identify what a row is describing, then look for the other words that belong with it. Sorting words into the right rows first can save you swaps later.
Read each row as you go. Familiar openings such as “a person who”, “the quality of” or “to” can help you work out the order. Solving in ten swaps takes care, particularly when a word appears more than once. How to play Definitions covers the rules and duplicate words.
